- Plan Early
First off, you should definitely plan early. As the special day gets closer and closer, stores sell out of merchandise and last-minute shoppers are stuck with leftovers.
You don’t want to come across as thoughtless or unappreciative of your relationships with people, so planning your gift ideas ahead of time is an absolute essential.
- Consider the Relationship and Budget
One of your primary thoughts to consider should be your relationship towards the gift recipient. This will help you decide on an appropriate budget. Naturally you will spend more money on those who’s relationship you value dearly. Perhaps you are much closer to one of your co-workers than the sister who lives on the opposite coast from you.
However, a valuable gift to a loved one doesn’t necessarily mean more money. Your budget simply sets a financial objective for the upcoming day. What makes a gift valuable is the time taken to consider the possibilities and coming up with something that is thoughtful and useful, whether it be a gift you create yourself or buy at the store.
- Brainstorming Ideas
Think about your recipients’ interests. This might sound simple, but thorough brainstorming is imperative and will go a long way in determining the perfect gift.
This will be the difference between a great gift and a useless gift. This may sound a bit harsh, but it’s the truth. How many times have you gotten a gift over the years that just wasn’t you? You know I am right.
For example, I love to take long hot baths, especially during the winter season, so naturally you would think bath items right? Wrong! First of all, I don’t put just anything in my bath. It must be environmentally friendly, safe for my body and geared to my skin type and preferably, in a scent I enjoy. Do you see where I am going with this?
Here is another example. My son’s teacher also loves to take baths. By digging a bit, I found out that she only uses oil in her water, likes floral scents and has very dry skin during the winter months.
Solution: I created an oil just for her using carrier oils that benefit dry skin and added floral essential oils. I put this recipe in a beautiful bottle and had the local print shop design a pretty label with her name. I know that she will use this. This is very inexpensive, in fact, you could put all this together for under $20. How much more personal can you get than this?
Of course, it’s not always easy to find out exactly what everybody likes, but if you pay attention, you can discover a few good clues that will produce a solid, unique and useful gift.
- Pay attention
Pay attention when you talk with them. Put effort into listening to the little things that they casually say, and you might come up with some amazing gift ideas. If possible, go shopping with the recipient. Even if they are shopping for somebody else, this can be very beneficial. Take stock of the things that they look at and mentally mark them in your head.
- Ask
Ask people. To begin with, you can ask the recipients’ friends or family. They might be able to tip you off to some great gift ideas, or possibly even want to pool their time or money together with yours and upgrade the present. You can also ask salespeople. These are the people that deal with the public on a daily basis, and likely know the gift ideas that are popular with certain demographics. Even if you want to get a personalized present, this can be a great way to get some gift ideas.
If all else fails and you find these tips completely useless, then there’s the option of asking your recipient. Have you ever heard the saying, “A good surprise lasts for five seconds, but a good gift lasts forever”? A lot of people will appreciate being asked; not only does it make things easier for you, but they know that they are getting something that they actually want.
